Brief Overview

The Red Scissortail is a species of Rasbora whose behavior and heartiness are very much like its very popular cousin the Harlequin Rasbora. These little fish are harder to find but would definitely be welcome in your tank. They should be kept away from larger, more aggressive fish like Cichlids, or large Angelfish. Some good tank mates for these fish would be those with similar size and temperament like the Black tetra, the Blue Neon Tetra, or its close relative mentioned above the Harlequin Rasbora.

Physical description

The Red Scissortail rarely exceed two inches in length. It has a silvery base and bright red fins. Its tail is two juxtaposed fins that look like scissors. It has small glimmering eyes and you will be rewarded with a glimmering sheen should you decide to get enough of them to create a dense school.

Again these fish are best kept in groups of at least five. The more you have the higher likelihood you will see schooling provided you have the room for it. These fish do not produce very much bio-waste, but a healthy school should have at least 30 gallons of water to swim in. A heavily planted aquarium is good for this species as they will take refuge in the foliage when startled, and lots of plants will reduce the over-all stress level of your aquarium. Standard tropical water and temperature apply to this fish.
