Brief Overview

The Silver Hatchet is another truly interesting little creature. It has a body shape that is unique to it and few other Hatchet's. Their awkward body shape, a down-facing crescent (see above), makes them look especially cute as they float, often very still, in your tank. Surprisingly they can also be very fast swimmers and will dart around your tank very alarmingly.

These fish will grow very rarely over two inches, so keep their size in mind when adding them to your populace. Large fish are, naturally, not compatible with the Hatchet, so do not introduce this fish into a tank containing Oscar Cichlid's, Neon Blue Gourami and the like. Some quality tank mates for the Silver Hatchet would be the Black Molly, Emperor Tetra, or Harlequin Rasbora.

Hatchet's are not a particularly hearty fish, mostly due to their small size. They are a wide fish, but very thin. A slow transition into your tank is important. We all always take care when first adding fish, but take a little extra care not to shock these fish, they will not recover well.

Once established your Silver Hatchet's will do well. Never keep less than five at a time in your tank, and 20-30 gallons is a minimum. Should you decide to keep a larger number, low to upper teens maybe, assuming you have the room, you will be rewarded with shimmering metallic schooling behaviors. Truly beautiful.
